Looking to add some variety and stimulus to your strength training? Drop sets, running the rack, ascending/descending sets, and giant sets are different names for a concept that is sure to add a high level of intensity to your work. It is simply performing a number of reps at a given weight then immediately lowering or increasing the weight for more reps, and repeating for no specified number of times. Their is no set amount of sets within one giant set that is the magic number, and no limit to the variations you can perform.
In this example we are going to train chest, so be sure and be adequately warmed up with push-ups or some other equivalent. Let’s begin a with 80 lb dumbbells at 10 reps on the bench then immediately pick up the 60 lb dumbbells for 8 reps, and so on. You can work from a lower weight to higher or back and forth. Have fun and try different combinations of sets, weights, reps, amount of rest, and exercises. Below is another example of drop set execution.
